Beginnings: Lotus Super Centre,
the first Lotus Supercenter at Seacon Square shopping mall on Srinakharin Road was opened on 28
October, representing the beginning of our Tesco Lotus family.
The First Discount Store.
Mahachai branch was opened on the 25
November, considered to be the first discount store in Thailand focussed on selling low price products.
The Birth of our Distribution Centre: D.C. Wangnoi.
Wang Noi Distribution Center (DC) was built to support future business growth, with a 3 billion baht investment in the most modern and sophisticated DC in Southeast Asia at that time.
The Evolution of Tesco Lotus.
after the economic crisis, Tesco Lotus was born as joint venture between leading UK retailer Tesco and CP Group. Since then, it has been instrumental in developing the Thai economy with investment in store construction and business operations in Thailand as well as taxes to develop Thai society.
The First Express: Ramintra Branch.
the first Express store was opened on Ramindra Road on the 16
November, to deliver convenience to customers in the local community.
Talad Lotus was another new format developed to match the size and needs of communities. Talad Phong Petch was the first store of this format to open in January 2003, offering fresh food as part of a big product range, with over 5,500 food and grocery items available to fulfill customers’ needs at an economical price.
“Rollback” – Quality Products at Reasonable Prices.
The Roll Back Program has emerged as the main vehicle for discounting quality products for customers. This program has helped customers to save almost 5 billion Baht since 2003.
Tesco for Thais Foundation, founded in 2003, supports education, raising funds for communities, and charitable organizations.
Tesco Visa Credit Card,
andThe Launch of the First Energy Conservation Building.
Tesco Visa Card is a credit card created to be “an answer for every day”. The card is intended to meet customers’ daily needs. In the beginning, the credit card was only usable at Tesco Lotus stores. Now the Tesco Visa Card gives many benefits when used to pay for services outside Tesco Lotus stores.
The first Green Store was opened on Rama 1 Road in October 2004. More than 1 billion baht was invested in this environmentally friendly building installed with photovoltaic solar panels.
Giving Back to the Community Projects (Corporate Social Responsibility).
Bang Bua Thong distribution center was opened, an investment of 751 million Baht. It was Tesco Lotus’ second distribution center, built to supply Express and Talad stores. It is fully equipped with international-standard systems such as the warehouse management systems which are the most sophisticated of their kind in Thailand.
The Community Promise is a key business policy to invest in community development through two major projects: Get Healthy with Tesco Lotus, which aims to encourage Thai people to have better health, physically and mentally. The other, Plant Nine Million Trees, aims to revive the environment at Thai national parks and encourage Thai youth to be concerned about the environment.
Launch of the Slogan “Rao Sai Jai Khun” (We Care For You”).
the Tesco Lotus brand was launched to improve the company’s image of being international, but with Thai culture. Our new philosophy “Rau Sai Jai Khun” (We Care) was created to communicate our feelings to customers, staff and the community.
Tesco Lotus was the first private company to use bio-diesel fuel in all of its delivery trucks, again showing leadership in green business.
Distribution Centre, Samkhok.
Tesco Lotus opened the second Green Store at Salaya which contains over 70 ground-breaking energy-saving and environmental initiatives, with a total investment of 800 million baht.
Sam Khok Distribution Center was opened in November 2008, with modern international standard systems and an improved working environment. It also uses technology which was able to reduce carbon emissions by 20% compared to Wang Noi DC.
The Start of Club Card
Plus Shopping Mall was opened in January. Its large shopping mall area has a full range of goods and services, as well a movie theatre, to serve customers of all age groups.
Clubcard, the Tesco Lotus “Thank you” card, was introduced to reward customers’ support for us. Clubcard members earn points every time they shop at Tesco Lotus, which exchanges the points for money, returned to customers every quarter as cash coupons. Clubcard members also receive many other special shopping privileges. Clubcard is another important step for Tesco Lotus to deliver the best possible shopping experience to Thai customers.
Release of F&F Product Line.

Also in 2010, Tesco Lotus became a retail leader in rewarding Clubcard members who buy environmentally-friendly “Green Products” with Green Points on their Clubcard.
We opened our Fresh Distribution Centre in Lamlukka, the most modern of its kind in Asia, under a concept of “best for customers and best for the environment”. The 1.6 billion baht investment increased our efficiency in the delivery of fresh food, to ensure our customers always get fresh, high-quality food.
Asia’s First Carbon Dioxide-Free Shop.
we launched the “Green Line”, a service innovation to bring customers greater convenience at checkouts and so have an improved shopping experience.
The Green Line is painted on the floor behind the bank of checkouts. If a checkout queue extends behind the “Green Line”, we’ll open another checkout immediately.
We opened the first Tesco Lotus Extra at Rama IV Rd in Bangkok with an investment of 300 million baht under the concept “Extra Shops, Extra Range and Extra Service.” The new format was developed from detailed and extensive customer surveys, and aims to appeal to both old and new customers.
The first Zero Carbon Store in Europe and Asia at Bangpra, Sri Racha, Chonburi demonstrates Tesco Lotus’ commitment to supporting the Thai economy and sustainable conservation of the environment. The store uses the latest technology to reduce emissions from using electricity and wholly offsets all emissions with alternative power generation to be a “Zero Carbon” store. It incorporates many innovations such as LED lighting, low-carbon hydrocarbon refrigerants, optimal use of natural sunlight, wind turbine and solar farm providing the store with power. A pool collects rainwater for washing cars and flushing toilets.
The Launch of Freehold and Leasehold Property
Fund: Tesco Lotus Retail Growth (TLGF).
the company held an Initial Public Offering on the Stock Exchange of Thailand for the Tesco Lotus Retail Growth Fund (TLGF) on March 19, 2012. The IPO raised 18.41 billion baht, a record for the property fund sector. TLGF is invested in 22 shopping malls around the country anchored by a Tesco Lotus store. The sites cover Bangkok, upcountry and tourist destinations.
Launch of Online Shopping.
“Tesco Lotus Shop Online” was launched to provide service for people with modern lifestyles. Customers are able to purchase goods online for home delivery at a time of their choosing, by merely visiting
and following the Shop Online menu to register. Over 20,000 product lines cover general merchandise, dry groceries, fresh food, chilled food and frozen food.
The First Regional Distribution Centre in Thailand – Khon Kaen Province.
Tesco Lotus opened its first regional Distribution Centre in Khon Kaen on an area of 52,000 square metres with an investment of 2.5 billion baht. It is the first composite DC of any Thai retailer which can handle all product categories on one site, including ambient goods, fresh food, chilled food and frozen food. The DC services over 300 stores in Northeast Thailand with the capacity to handle up to 3 million cases per week. The DC has created over 1,000 local jobs and supports more direct sourcing from local suppliers. It will help customers in Northeastern Thailand to get more of the products they need.
